SUNDAY - Lady of America, Reston
11:00a - 11:55a, Interm/Advanced Middle Eastern Dance Technique & Artistry
8 week session: Jan 15 – Mar 4. FULL
Prerequisite: Minimum 1 yr progressive experience or instructor approval.)
Expand your movement vocabulary, enhance your knowledge of Middle Eastern dance styles and improve your performance with a more diverse repertoire. Designed to be fast-paced and challenging, this class explores more in-depth technique and concepts including layering, level changes, advanced drills and exploring infinite variations! Incorporating movements and steps from Egyptian, Iranian, and Khaleejy style dance traditions, the drills culminate in fun combinations and dynamic choreographed sequences. Ballet slippers or dance shoes are highly recommended. Winter 2012: Learn to create your own exciting show. Explore components of a dynamic performance set for different audiences and venues.
12:00p-12:55p, Middle Eastern Music Education & Appreciation (all levels) (More Info)
Explore music theory, percussion technique and rhythms; Learn to interpret various musical forms, analyze must-know songs, make a choreography map and more! We will practice rhythms and percussion in every class. Bring instruments if you have them (finger cymbals, Middle Eastern drum such as tabla/doumbek, riq or frame drum). We will learn about and analyze specific songs in each class. If you would like to drop-in to a class, email katayoundance@hotmail.com.
8 week session: Jan 15 – Mar 4. Drop-in $20/class.
1/29 – “Alf Layla Wa Layla”: Analyze song for rhythms, instrumentation and structure. Create a choreography map.

Mar 18, 10am-1pm, Persian Dance Intensive (mixed-level)
This 3-hour workshop will focus on classical Persian dance and popular social dances, primarily, Baba Karam. Learn the secrets to capturing the unique Persian aesthetic as we explore the distinct flavors and variations of Persian dance steps. More than arm and hand movements, learn how the details of body alignment, musical interpretation and flow of energy, transform simple movements to poetry in motion. While suitable for mixed-level abilities, this class will be strenuous and is not recommended for beginner dancers. Pre-requisite: minimum 6 months progressive dance training, or instructor permission. Wear ballet slippers. Bring pen/paper for notes, water and a small snack.
Learn to use each prop and how to work both into a performance set. Learn to choose appropriate music and perform with proper technique. We will explore storytelling and cultural context, and how these concepts inspire a unique approach to artistry and costuming when dancing with these popular props. As time and student ability allow, we will practice using multiples of our props; ie. double-veil and double-cane. While suitable for mixed-level abilities, this class will move quickly and is not recommended for beginner dancers. Pre-requisite: basic skills using each prop with desire to expand and improve upon; AND 6 months progressive dance training, or instructor permission. Wear dance shoes. Bring one to three veils, one to two canes, water, and a small snack.

With a strong focus on proper posture, alignment, and artistry, students gain a foundation in strong technique for continued progress. Activities include fun drills, choreographed sequences and exploring musicality and self-expression. Ballet slippers or dance shoes are highly recommended. 7:00p - 7:55p, Persian Dance Technique & Performance Skills (Ages 17+, mixed-level)
Prerequisite: Minimum 6 months progressive experience or instructor approval.)
Persian dance styles are characterized by upper body fluidity, intricate floor patterns, expressive movements and dazzling spins! While developing solo and group performance skills students study and practice the diverse dance styles of Iran, the country formerly known as Persia. With a strong emphasis on the aesthetics and language of Persian dance, students will work with choreography and practice improvisational skills. Ballet shoes required.
