Middle Eastern Dance, Music, and Cultural Studies
Certificate of Specialization

Overview
While the Certificate of Specialization may indicate readiness to begin teaching, it is not a teaching certificate. Candidates interested in pursuing a teaching career in Middle Eastern dance should apply to Mosaique’s Teacher Training program.
The program is goal oriented and driven by a challenging curriculum; however the format is flexible and individualized to meet the interests and needs of the participants. The program provides opportunities for participants to tap into their full artistic, intellectual and physical potential. There are five curriculum levels each encompassing a vast amount of knowledge and skills. Upon completion of the program requirements of all five levels, participants receive the Certificate of Specialization in Middle Eastern Dance, Music and Cultural Studies.
The Mosaique program is different from other certification programs in that it is not a “belly dance” certification. While belly dance skills and knowledge are a component of the curriculum, there is a strong and broad emphasis on authentic regional dances styles, as well as cultural knowledge and professionalism. The program does not limit participants to Mosaique classes. The curriculum is comprehensive and diverse, and requires coursework in dance technique, music and cultural study as well as performance skills from any qualified instructors.
Curriculum and Fees
Mosaique classes directly address the objectives of the curriculum; however, participants may receive training at other studios while completing their assessments and projects toward certification through Mosaique. The program fees include all materials (books, CDs, DVDs) and special consultation and mentoring sessions. At each curriculum level, students must complete a minimum number of training hours, homework assignments, and assessment projects. Regardless of previous experience, every participant begins with Level I. Participants may advance through the program at their own individual pace; however they are allotted up to one year per level to compete the requirements.
The cost to participate in the program is a separate expense from classroom training hours. The fees for the program are as follows:
Curriculum Level 1 - Foundations of the Dance, Music & Culture ($175)
Curriculum Level 2 - Experiences in the Dance, Music & Culture ($175)
Curriculum Level 3 – Expression in the Dance, Music & Culture ($200)
Curriculum Level 4 – Artistry in the Dance, Music & Culture ($250)
Curriculum Level 5 - Professionalism in the Dance, Music & Culture ($250)
The program was developed by Katayoun Hutson, professional dancer and former school teacher, who combines her expertise of Middle Eastern dances with her experiences in the classroom to create a dynamic program. In addition, she brings the perspective of a diverse and unique background which includes a wide range of experiences and accomplishments as a performer, educator and community leader.

Middle Eastern Dance, Music and Culture:
Teacher Training Program
Introduction
This program was created with the philosophy that every teacher needs to start somewhere and that we are all perpetual students. The teacher who stops learning is one who can no longer teach. The foundation of this program does not test to show extensive knowledge of the dance forms we call Middle Eastern, Belly Dance. Rather it takes into account and evaluates the potential, drive, and vision the candidate possesses to become an expert and role model for her prospective students.
With this in mind the requirements are designed with the expectation that the scope and breadth of candidate’s knowledge and experience will be incorporated into each required document as necessary and appropriate in order to fully demonstrate his/her preparedness to become a qualified instructor of the Dance.
Purpose
To train, support, promote and assist new instructors of the Dance making the transition from student to the role of expert, role model and authority figure of Middle Eastern/Belly Dance.
Mosaique offers two distinct programs:
