Founder’s Message
By Katayoun Hutson
When my family and I returned from our trip to Europe this past summer, we felt happy to be home but would have gladly stayed another month (or two). For my teenage children this was their first trip outside the United States. Although they complained and whined at the hundreds of art museums we visited, they admitted that all of it was fun and exciting. Both my son and daughter were also bitten by the language bug. They have always been interested to learn languages on their own, but now they have the experience of real world application and necessity to inspire and motivate them to pursue further study.
For me, I had never had the desire or inclination to learn Italian, but we all made it a point to learn as much as we could before and during our stay in Florence. Between the three of us having studied French, Japanese, German, Spanish and Farsi, Italian was a breeze, comparatively. I hope to continue learning Italian as I plan to return.
While I never had a particular interest to study Greek either, after our visit to Athens, we were all a little more curious and interested to learn this important ancient language. My daughter in particular found the sounds of the Greek language appealing. I imagine compared to the other languages she has studied-French, German and Japanese- Greek pronunciation is quite soothing and easier to follow.
With the academic year underway, I hope you will take the time to examine your family’s interests in learning a new language. It is truly a rewarding experience that not only enhances the individual but brings families closer together. Enjoy the language articles in this issue and let them inspire and motivate you to pursue or resume your own language studies.

A Bien Tot,
